Vehicle Extrication

Scene stabilization and vehicle extrication support for crashes where occupants cannot safely get out on their own.

Vehicle extrication after crashes in Garysburg, NC

Serious crashes can turn into technical rescues in a matter of seconds. When a vehicle is crushed, rolled over, pinned against another object, or sitting in an unsafe position, our job is to make the scene safer and help create access to the people inside.

That work often starts before any tool comes out. We stabilize the vehicle, control hazards, manage traffic exposure, and coordinate closely with law enforcement and EMS. If extrication is needed, we work deliberately so patients can be reached without adding unnecessary movement or delay.

Scene Safety First

Before any tool comes out, crews stabilize the vehicle and control traffic, glass, and leaking-fluid hazards.

Works With EMS

Firefighters create access to trapped occupants while EMS handles patient care and transport.

Ready for Rural Roads

Crashes on nearby highways and back roads can trap occupants, so the department trains for technical rescue.

What our crew does on scene

Serious crashes can become technical rescues in seconds. When a vehicle is crushed, rolled, or pinned, crews first make the scene safer — stabilizing the vehicle, managing traffic, and controlling fuel and glass hazards — before creating a path to anyone trapped inside.

From there, the work is deliberate. Firefighters use hydraulic and hand tools to remove doors, roofs, or other obstructions so EMS can reach patients with as little additional movement as possible. Every step is coordinated with EMS and law enforcement on scene.

For any active fire, smoke, or smell of gas, call 911 immediately. For non-emergency questions about Garysburg VFD, call (252) 536-0400.

Vehicle Extrication FAQ

Does every crash require extrication tools?

No. Many crashes only need scene safety and patient access support. Extrication tools are used when damage or vehicle position keeps someone from getting out safely.

Who handles medical transport?

EMS handles medical transport. Our role is often scene safety, access, stabilization, and support while EMS cares for the patient.
